Winter Gardening

After last years munching on my Bananas, by spider-mite, I was sure I was going to dry them out this year and keep them in the shed. However, with the weather this year, they actually only really got going in September/ October and it seemed a shame to hack them back. This year I have pre-armed with nematodes. They seem to have faced off my fungas gnats so I think it will work!

I've been working on several large garden designs over the last few months. The design above is for a family that have a large new build house and garden. There are amazing views over the countryside of Kent from the garden. There is also a bridle path that runs along the front of the property. I found that the lovely owners were using the areas without the views as they felt exposed. My design incorporates features, on the diagonal, that screen the garden from the path but allow them full access to the views. The area at the bottom is absolutely lovely to sit it and now it will feel completely private.

Like a lot of new properties the soil leads a lot to be desired. They are going to invest in digging a lot of it up, where the planting is going, and put in new organic matter. An investment well worth it if you want your new plants to survive.

As we are talking about soil investment there has been a lot of mulching going on. Mulching is simply adding a good layer of organic matter to the soil, like manure or compost. I've found in this established garden that the soil needed a good boost before we plant it up in spring. It's a job well worth doing as it helps suppress the weeds, keep the moisture in and feeds the micro organisms in the soil. A very satisfying job.

As we go into winter its worth noting that if you want a garden developed in 2023 you need to get the ball rolling early. Many landscapers are already booking into the spring and planting is really a Spring or Autumn job.

If you are thinking of having a design 2023 you can always pre book a slot and have a garden consultation. This will give you an idea of what you will need a landscaper in to do. As I've developed my skills in garden design the amount of detail and content I give in garden design has increased. I've realised that most Garden Designs should cost in the realms of £3k with the amount of work I put into them. If you want to secure a design package now, at 2022 pricing, get in touch by phone 07375 870672 or email catriona@catrionastiles.co.uk

At this point in January there is no hiding place left in the garden. I have a love hate relationship with this time of year. Part of me is itching for spring to come, to clear the decks and allow new growth in, the other part clinging on to anything that adds structural interest. Gardening for me at the moment is a quick break, away from the computer, to get me outside and re-assess what I have. When all the perennials have gone and the grasses have blown over you are left with the...

www.catrionastiles.co.uk Smoke, Mirrors and a Paintbrush! I have had a really exciting May. Along with my designs being started to be made this month I was lucky enough to work at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show! I've always loved going to show for inspiration and have been going for more than 15 years now. When I found out that a designer, Camellia Taylor, near to me, was designing and building a garden I got in touch with her to offer a helping hand. I'm very pleased she said yes. Donning the...

How well do you know the plants in your garden? A part of my design process, I find so rewarding, is working with my clients. Sure you could get a garden design, get it made and have an instant garden but how would it make you feel? I think a little bit disengaged from the garden you have. I love that my clients have an emotional connection to their gardens. If you know what plants are there, what the soil is like... you are rewarded on a completely different level, mentally.
